Every Digital SAT question belongs to one of eight content domains: four in Reading and Writing and four in Math. Below is one worked question from each, written in the format the test uses, with the reasoning that gets you to the answer and the trap each wrong choice sets.

Give yourself the real pace. Reading and Writing is 54 questions in 64 minutes, about 71 seconds each, and Math is 44 questions in 70 minutes, about 95 seconds each. Answer all four questions in a section before you open any explanation.

Reading and Writing practice questions

Each Reading and Writing question comes with its own short passage of 25 to 150 words, so there is no long reading to hold in your head. What decides your score is reading precisely.

Question 1: Craft and Structure

Words in context

Planners in one coastal town drafted a fishing quota system without consulting the people who fished there. Although the plan looked sound on paper, it proved ______ in practice: boats simply landed their catch in the next harbor, where the quota did not apply.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. A) ineffective
  2. B) popular
  3. C) permanent
  4. D) expensive
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. The colon promises evidence for the blank, and the evidence is that boats moved their catch to a harbor the quota did not cover, so the plan failed to do its job. Nothing in the text says it was liked (popular), lasted (permanent) or cost a lot (expensive). On words-in-context questions, predict the word from the evidence before you read the choices.

Question 2: Information and Ideas

Central ideas and details

A team of agronomists tested whether planting clover between rows of corn would reduce the need for nitrogen fertilizer. Over three growing seasons, plots with clover produced corn yields similar to plots that received the standard fertilizer dose, while using 40 percent less fertilizer. The team cautioned, however, that all three seasons had above-average rainfall.

Which choice best states the main idea of the text?

  1. A) Clover between corn rows cut fertilizer use without lowering yields, though the study’s conditions may limit how widely the result applies.
  2. B) Corn grows best when it receives above-average rainfall and no fertilizer.
  3. C) Clover is a more profitable crop than corn in regions with heavy rainfall.
  4. D) The agronomists concluded that fertilizer should no longer be used on corn.
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. A main-idea answer has to cover the whole text, including the caution in the last sentence. B contradicts the text (the clover plots still used fertilizer), C compares profits the text never mentions, and D overstates a result the authors themselves qualified.

Question 3: Expression of Ideas

Transitions

Early versions of the battery stored relatively little energy for their weight. ______ engineers steadily improved the electrode materials, and within two decades the batteries could power cars for hundreds of miles.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?

  1. A) Similarly,
  2. B) Subsequently,
  3. C) For example,
  4. D) In other words,
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. The second sentence describes what happened after the first, so the relationship is a sequence in time. Nothing is being compared (similarly), the improvement is not an example of the early limitation (for example), and it does not restate it (in other words). Name the relationship between the two sentences first, then find the transition that signals it.

Question 4: Standard English Conventions

Boundaries

The museum's new exhibit features more than two hundred ______ many of which have never been displayed outside the archive.

Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

  1. A) photographs,
  2. B) photographs;
  3. C) photographs.
  4. D) photographs and
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. “Many of which have never been displayed” is a dependent clause that adds information about the photographs, so a comma attaches it. A semicolon (B) or a period (C) has to be followed by a clause that could stand on its own, and this one cannot. D produces “photographs and many of which,” which is ungrammatical.

Math practice questions

You can use a calculator for the whole Math section, including the Desmos graphing calculator built into Bluebook. Some questions ask you to type in your answer rather than pick one. Each one below is written as multiple choice so that its trap answer shows.

Question 5: Algebra

Linear equations in two variables

A gym charges a one-time sign-up fee plus a fixed monthly fee. The total cost for 4 months is $130, and the total cost for 10 months is $280. What is the sign-up fee, in dollars?

  1. A) 25
  2. B) 30
  3. C) 35
  4. D) 55
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Six extra months cost $280 − $130 = $150, so the monthly fee is $150 ÷ 6 = $25. Four months then cost $100, which leaves $130 − $100 = $30 for the sign-up fee. Choice A is the trap: it is the monthly fee, not the one the question asks for. Underline what the question asks for before you solve.

Question 6: Advanced Math

Nonlinear functions

The function f is defined by f(x) = x2 − 6x + 5. For what value of x does f(x) reach its minimum?

  1. A) −3
  2. B) 1
  3. C) 3
  4. D) 5
Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. A parabola that opens upward has its minimum at the vertex, where x = −b ÷ 2a = 6 ÷ 2 = 3. You can also factor: (x − 1)(x − 5) has zeros at 1 and 5, and the vertex sits halfway between them. In the built-in Desmos calculator, graphing the function and tapping the lowest point gives (3, −4) in seconds. Choices B and D are the zeros, not the minimum.

Question 7: Problem-Solving and Data Analysis

Percentages

The price of a jacket was increased by 20%. The new price was then decreased by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

  1. A) 80%
  2. B) 96%
  3. C) 100%
  4. D) 104%
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Percent changes multiply: 1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96, so the final price is 96% of the original. Choice C assumes the two changes cancel, but the 20% decrease is taken from a larger number than the 20% increase was. Pick an easy original price, such as $100, if you want to check: $100 → $120 → $96.

Question 8: Geometry and Trigonometry

Right triangles and trigonometry

In right triangle ABC, angle C is the right angle. If sin A = 3/5, what is cos B?

  1. A) 3/5
  2. B) 4/5
  3. C) 3/4
  4. D) 4/3
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. Angles A and B add up to 90°, and the sine of an angle equals the cosine of its complement. Directly: sin A is the side opposite A over the hypotenuse, which is BC/AB, and cos B is the side next to B over the hypotenuse, which is also BC/AB. Choice B is cos A.

What to do with the questions you missed

  1. Name the cause, not just the topic. Did you misread the question, fall for the trap choice, run out of time or not know the rule? Each one has a different fix.
  2. Keep an error log. Write down the domain, the cause and the rule in one line. After 20 or 30 entries, the pattern tells you what to study next.
  3. Redo the question two days later without looking at the explanation. If you get it right and can say why, move on.
  4. Move to full modules. Single questions build skill. The two-module adaptive test also tests pacing, and only timed modules train that.
