Your next AP World History session

  • Start with a diagnostic to find which of the nine units is actually costing you marks.
  • Practice stimulus-based multiple-choice sets, since every MCQ arrives attached to a source.
  • Review misses by unit and period, not by question number.

Tip: the four 12–15% units (3 through 6) are together worth roughly half the exam. Weight your revision accordingly.

Why PrepGen.ai for AP World History: Modern

AP World History rewards recall you can apply under time pressure across eight centuries. PrepGen.ai lets you practice adaptive multiple-choice sets that mirror the stimulus-based format, then analyze every miss by unit, period and skill so revision targets the gap rather than the whole course.

See how PrepGen.ai works for the full adaptive loop, from diagnostic to targeted drill to review.

All nine units, weighted like the exam

Coverage from The Global Tapestry to Globalization, with question supply that reflects the official 8–10% and 12–15% unit weightings.

Stimulus-based practice

Every multiple-choice question on the real exam hangs off a source. Practice the same way, on texts, maps, charts and images rather than bare recall prompts.

Period-level analytics

See whether misses cluster in 1200–1450, 1450–1750, 1750–1900 or 1900–present, which is how the SAQs and LEQ are scoped.

Built for a heavy course load

Short adaptive sessions that fit between other APs, with review that surfaces the handful of units actually dragging your score.

AP World History Exam Format & What Changes in May 2027

The AP World History: Modern exam runs 3 hours 15 minutes and is taken digitally in Bluebook. Two of the four question types change with the May 2027 administration.

Section I-A: Multiple Choice

  • 55 questions | 55 minutes | 40% of score

  • Questions come in sets of 3–4 built on a single stimulus

  • Sources include texts, images, charts and maps

Section I-B: Short Answer

  • 3 questions | 40 minutes | 20% of score

  • All three are required — the choice on question 3 is gone from May 2027

  • Q1 uses secondary text, Q2 a primary text, Q3 a non-text source

Section II-A: Document-Based Question

  • 1 question | 60 minutes recommended | 25% of score

  • Includes a 15-minute reading period and seven documents

  • From May 2027 it draws on a wider chronological range

Section II-B: Long Essay Question

  • 1 question | 40 minutes | 15% of score

  • One required prompt from May 2027, replacing the old choice of three

  • Now carries a short introductory statement orienting the task

The May 2027 changes remove choice, not content

Question counts, timings and score weightings are unchanged, and so are the course content, the skills and the scoring rubrics. What changed is that you no longer pick between prompts: all three SAQs are required and the LEQ is a single question. Practically, that means you cannot revise selectively and dodge a weak period on exam day.

AP World History Study Plans for May 2027

Pick the runway you actually have left, then practice against it consistently rather than cramming the week before.

Six months out (start by December)

  • Work through units in order alongside class, one unit every two weeks
  • Finish each unit with a timed multiple-choice set before moving on
  • Keep a running list of terms and processes you keep missing

Three months out (start by February)

  • Prioritize units 3 to 6 — together they are roughly half the exam
  • Alternate a unit drill and a mixed-period set each week
  • Add one full-length multiple-choice section every fortnight

One month out (April)

  • Drill only the units your analytics still flag as weak
  • Sit timed sections in full to build stamina for 3h 15m
  • Review the four question types so no format surprises you

A routine that survives a five-AP spring

Weekdays: 20-30 minutes

One adaptive set on the unit you are covering in class, then read the explanations for everything you missed.

Weekends: 60-90 minutes

A longer mixed set spanning several periods, then a review pass sorted by unit rather than by question order.

What Changes on the AP World History Exam in May 2027

Two of the four question types change. Counts, timings, weightings, content and rubrics do not.

Short-answer questions

All three are required — there is no longer a choice on question 3. Each carries source material: one or more secondary texts for Q1, a primary text for Q2, and a primary or secondary non-text source for Q3, with each question focused on a different period.

Long essay question

You answer a single required prompt rather than choosing between three, and it now opens with a brief introductory statement orienting the task. You still develop your own thesis and pick your own evidence.

The document-based question also draws on a wider chronological range. Everything else holds: the multiple-choice section, the scoring rubrics, and the course content and skills are unchanged. Source: AP history exam updates and the official exam format.

AP World History FAQs

Exam logistics

When is the AP World History exam in 2027?+
AP World History: Modern is scheduled for the morning of Thursday, May 6, 2027. AP exams run across two weeks in May 2027, and your school confirms the exact reporting time, so treat the College Board calendar as the source of truth.
How long is the AP World History exam?+
Three hours and fifteen minutes in total: 55 minutes for multiple choice, 40 minutes for the three short-answer questions, then 60 minutes recommended for the document-based question and 40 for the long essay.
Is the AP World History exam digital?+
Yes. AP World History: Modern is taken in the Bluebook testing app, with both the multiple-choice and free-response work completed there and submitted at the end of the exam.

Scoring and difficulty

What is a good AP World History score?+
A 3 is passing and a 4 or 5 is what selective credit policies usually want. In 2025, 64% of students scored a 3 or higher, with 14% earning a 5 and 33% a 4.
Which AP World History units are worth the most?+
Units 3 through 6 — Land-Based Empires, Transoceanic Interconnections, Revolutions, and Consequences of Industrialization — are each weighted 12–15%, so together they account for roughly half the exam. The other five units are weighted 8–10% each.
Is AP World History harder than AP Human Geography?+
They are demanding in different ways. AP World History covers eight centuries and adds a document-based question and a long essay, so it asks for more sustained writing. AP Human Geography is a shorter exam with a narrower concept set. Students often take AP Human Geography first and AP World History once they are comfortable with source analysis.
Can multiple-choice practice really move my score?+
The multiple-choice section is 40% of the total score by itself, and it is the most optimized part of the exam to drill. Every question is attached to a source, so when you practice stimulus sets you are also rehearsing the sourcing and contextualization the written sections are graded on.

Using PrepGen.ai

Does PrepGen.ai grade DBQ or LEQ essays?+
No. PrepGen.ai focuses on multiple-choice practice and analytics for AP World History; it does not set or score short-answer, document-based or long-essay responses. The content mastery and source reasoning it builds is what those sections reward, but the writing itself you should practice with your teacher and the official scoring rubrics.
How does PrepGen.ai decide what to give me next?+
PrepGen.ai analyzes every attempt by unit, period and question type, then builds your next set from the areas where accuracy is lowest. The more you practice, the more optimized the selection becomes.
